5 Injured in Tappan Zee Bridge Collapse on July 19, 2016
Following the collapse of a large crane on the Tappan Zee Bridge, 5 people were injured. Not only did two workers receive injuries, but also 3 drivers who swerved to avoid a collision were injured as well.
The cause of the accident has not been determined yet; however, many previous crane incidents concern worksite safety issues. After a deadly crane collapse in Manhattan in 2016, Mayor de Blasio and NYC building commissioner Rick Chandler created the Crane Safety Technical Working Group. The experts’ goal of the group was to evaluate New York crane safety regulations and propose recommendations to enhance previous regulations and restrict any further crane mishaps in New York.
This group realized that although the United States has some of the most thorough regulations in the world, the NYC Department of Buildings has not updated these regulations since 2008.
