Third degree burns move entirely through the dermis layer of the skin and may effects the muscle, fat and bone below. They can result in permanent damage and should be treated by a professional. Fourth degree burns are the most serious and the damage moves all the way through, to the bone below. The skin will be charred looking and excision will be necessary.
